Mets hiring Jared Porter as next general manager: ‘Got it right’

The Mets are hiring Jared Porter to become their next general manager, sources told The Post’s Joel Sherman and Mike Puma.

Porter currently is a senior vice president and assistant general manager for the Diamondbacks, after working under Theo Epstein with the Red Sox and Cubs. With the Cubs’ front office reshuffling following Epstein’s recent decision to step aside, Porter had also been a candidate for that GM position, under new president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer.

“Mets got it right, he’s the man,” tweeted Dan Haren, a former MLB pitcher who now works with the Diamondbacks.

Mets team president Sandy Alderson’s original plan was to hire a president of baseball operations, but the idea was scuttled after failing to receive permission to interview top talent already under contract. Cleveland’s Chris Antonetti, Milwaukee’s David Stearns and Tampa Bay’s Erik Neander were potential targets for Alderson.

The front office was gutted by Alderson upon his return to the team — GM Brodie Van Wagenen, assistant GMs Allard Baird and Adam Guttridge departed, along with special assistant Omar Minaya. In the interim, Alderson and John Ricco have handled baseball operations. Ricco, a former assistant GM with the team, is expected to remain in baseball operations after spending the past two seasons overseeing special projects with the Mets.
