CPAC to be held in person at Florida hotel in February

The 2021 Conservative Political Action Conference will be held in person and mostly indoors in February, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report Tuesday.

The annual gathering of conservatives is set to take place from Feb. 25-28 at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando, Florida, Fox News reported.

“CPAC believes that Florida is the right state to host CPAC 2021,” American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp told Fox in a statement.

An ACU spokesman said that “we believe that we can host this event in a safe and responsible way” and noted that “we intend to abide by the regulations put forth” by the Sunshine State.

It’ll be the first time that CPAC is held far from the nation’s capital. Since the symposium first launched in 1974, it’s taken place in or around Washington, D.C.

For the last eight years, the event was hosted at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Maryland, just outside D.C. However, the convention center is closed amid the pandemic, according to Fox.

Organizers said next year’s event will include virtual components, though it’ll be held mostly indoors at the Hyatt, which is connected to the Orange County Convention Center.

CPAC 2020 drew nearly 20,000 people over its four days. The convention was held in February, before states began locking down in an effort to curb the spread of the virus.

It was later announced that an attendee with VIP access had tested positive for COVID-19, prompting some Republican lawmakers who were in contact with the person to quarantine.
