Buhari govt told to stop making COVID-19 treatment look like ‘voodoo, secret cult’

The Human Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has faulted the Federal Government’s decision to gag recovered COVID-19 patients from disclosing their treatment regime.

HURIWA said the government should stop making the treatment of COVID-19 patients look like a “secret cult and voodoo” practice.

The frontline rights group stressed that preventing patients from revealing their treatment regime while in isolation was an infringement on their fundamental human rights to expression, as stated in the constitution.

It insisted that the Federal Government took a lacklustre and unscientific methods of handling the whole issues of containment, treatments and finding pragmatic cures to the dreaded COVID-19 ailment in the country.

Recall that the Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha had cautioned recovered COVID-19 patients to stop disclosing the treatments they got while in isolation centres.

However, a statement by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said Mustapha’s remark was contrary to section 39(1) of the Nigerian constitution of 1999 as amended which guarantees freedom of expression.

The right group stressed that the SGF’s “illegal order of gagging violates the freedom of religion” because must religions permit survivors to render public testament of their survival from life-threatening illnesses.

According to Onwubiko: “The federal government’s warning to COVID-19 survivors to stop giving details of the drugs used for their treatment, so they don’t encourage self-medication is unconstitutional and has further strengthened the conspiracy theories about the certainty of the rate of spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria. That statement is like telling the entire World that what the Presidential Task force on the CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC IN NIGERIA has been doing is to engage in voodooism contrary to expectations of twenty-first-century compliant scientific inquiries and research in line with best global practices.

“A government that tries to gag the citizens to stop talking about how they become well again after suffering from the unfortunate affliction of COVID-19 and a government that against all rational opposition proceeded with the feeding of ghost pupils in the guise of school feeding programme has only succeeded in making people have doubts regarding the combating of the CORONAVIRUS pandemic in Nigeria given that corruption that has manifested in the implementation of the SOCIAL INVESTMENT PROGRAMME including the ill-fated SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME have fed into the growing cynicism and doubts on the genuineness of the best efforts of government to contain and defeat the ravaging CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC IN NIGERIA. ” The Human Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has faulted the Federal Government’s decision to gag recovered COVID-19 patients from disclosing their treatment regime.
